Some interaction was quite interesting, for example a Hammerkop trying to
snatch pieces from a Fish Eagle:
The black egret has an interesting fishing technique:
The lakes are the main water source in the dry times so it is relatively easy
to find the animals near them. As we were already at the beginning of the small
rainy season, the few, but fierce, rain showers that left many large puddles
reduced this advantage quickly over the days we where there.
During the whole day drives we usually stopped at some shady tree for lunch,
which was frugal but sufficient.
Peter and I brought laptops, while Elmar was using an image tank to store the
daily shots. The evening routine was then us doing the first culling at the bar
while enjoying a Kili or Safari with onlookers complaining that they would be
happy to have the shots that we nuked.
On the second day our party and some elephants that we where aiming our lenses
at, was surprised by a short, but fierce, rain shower:
Just before the rain:
The downpour starts:
Not only us and the elephants where caught in the rain:
On the evening of the second day, we found something rather interesting, a dead
hippo with crocodiles trying to get through the thick skin.
We visited the site the next day again. Some silly elephant thought us to be trespassers and chased us off in the morning, so we returned only in the evening.
We have no idea about the cause of death. Surely not the crocodiles, they where only scavengers. But as this was just at the beginning of the small rainy season, we assume it was either a disease or famine, most hippos looked a bit thin when seen out of the water.
More to come.....
